MADE PLANS FOR APRIL 16?

MTN received this e-mail on Thursday, March 11:

....my name is Tim, I’m a filmmaker based in LA and Minnesota native.

I wanted to introduce myself and our new “running” documentary film
“MY RUN”, narrated by Billy Bob Thornton. It’s the story of Terry Hitchcock, a Minnesota man who after tragically losing his wife to breast cancer, suffering a heart attack and struggling to raise three young children on his own seized on an idea. He wanted to accomplish the impossible: run 75 consecutive marathons in 75 consecutive days to bring attention to the incredibly difficult lives of single-parent families.

Our film will be PREMIERING at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Int. Film Festival on April 16 at 7:30pm. We would like to invite you and your friends to join us on this Special Night!

We have also set up a Facebook Event for this Screening that includes all of the details. LINK

Would you be able to help us spread the word of our film within your network?

Anyways, I wish you much success and happiness... Tim

SUZIE'S A JUICER!

2009 Minnesota Multisport Rookie of the Year Suzie Finger freely admits that she is "A Juicer." Don't misunderstand. She's not saying, like late rocker Janis Joplin used to, that she prefers Jim Beam and Jack Daniels to acid, ludes and horse, yesteryear's drugs of choice. Heck, we don't know if Suzie likes to occasionally slam a few beakers of Grey Goose or a few shots of Jaeger. Maybe she does. But probably not. What we are saying is that she's into making various juicy concoctions, especially from healthy stuff like tree bark, bird nests and topsoil.

Here's a wheatgrass (yum!) recipe from her cool blog site:

Pass The Grass

Ann Wigmore's Wheatgrass Smoothie

Ann Wigmore was the very first person to juice wheatgrass. She used to nibble on grass and suck out its juice. On the chance it might grind grass, she purchase
d a meat grinder at a garage sale, tweaked the machine, added a stainless steel straining sieve and it became the world's first wheatgrass juicer. Ann also ran the Boston Marathon. Very cool, I love an endurance athlete on the grass.

-3 oranges
-1 ripe banana
-1 lime
-2 or 3 inch round wheat grass
-13 ice cubes

If you haven't visited Suzie's site yet, we encourage you to do so. Isn't it fun to imagine Suzie and her coach/pal Dan Cohen washing down their extra hot Buffalo Wild Wings with a smoothie made from tree bark and bird nests?

KATHIE CHEZICK

We received this sad and poignant e-mail from Team Minnesota's Jon Balabuck on the evening of March 9:

Hi MTN Readers,

I hope all is well,

I am sending you a little note on the passing of one of our multisport family. Kathie Chezick age 50 of Thunder Bay, Ontario was killed on Monday March 1st when she was struck by at Transport Truck while on a training run.

I had the awesome pleasure of being her coach. She was an amazing women. Standing only 5,2" she had the personality of a giant, and a smile that radiated genuine happiness. She was a traithlete. trained hard and never complained. A swimmer by trade, she learned to endure and try her absolute best whenever asked. She decided at age 50 she would do an Ironman. and with Little outside help, she posted a 5:00 hr 1/2 at chisago. In Wisconsin, she did in an amazing 11:59 3rd in her age group behind Jan Guenther. Later she told me she did it on water and chicken soup broth. Gatorade was gross and gels didn't sit right. As for pacing, she went by feel, no HR monitor, just the sound of her breathing. I admired her for this take on racing in an age where super tech is the norm. Her ticket was punched for Kona in 2010, and it was bliss to be associated with such a dynamic and goal orientated person.

On Sunday Feb 28th we did our first Big training day together - a 400m time trial (500yrds approx) a 1:20 bike workout and a 5km local running race. She crushed it. Kathie broke a 25 year old personal record in the water (5:55) and PB'd in the 5km 22:53. This chick was in shape, the girls on the island would be concerned; she was a legitimate top 5 in 50-54.

It is hard to write about someone who so closely loved the same ideals as myself. A girl that was just happy to "do" and not worry about the "it".

We will miss you dearly Kathie, especially that radiant smile.

I'll be watching Kona this year thinking- what if?

- Jon Balabuck

Ed. Thanks for sharing, Jon.

DUDE'S GOT THE KAVORKA!

(photos: Top - Sarah Kournikova-Waataja's younger sister Anna, who is definitely not as hot as her "Big Sis." Left - Mike modeling his much-needed "Bro." Right Side - Cosmo--Mr. Kavorka--Kramer; the humiliated Super Boston; Daryl Hall with mullet, John Oats in his "Fro" stage. He would later graduate to a mullet.)

Triathlete/swim school guy Mike Waataja and Cosmo Kramer have something in common.

Something devastating!

What is it, you ask?

Both of these guys have THE KAVORKA!

You remember the "Kavorka" episode on Seinfeld, don't you? Kramer learns that he has what the Latvian's call "The lure of the animal," aka "The Kavorka." Novitiate Roberta falls hard for the gangly tall-haired lunatic and only the fetor of a garlic clove necklace can prevent her from denouncing her vows and running away with him.

And Mike Waataja has got it, too! (He's one of only Norwegians to have this "curse." The other lives in Duluth.)

How can we be sure that Mike has the Kavorka? Isn't it obvious? How else would a guy like him be able to attract and marry Anna Kournikova's slightly older but definitely hotter sister, Sarah?

A guy like him? Yeah, he's a nice looking dude, BUT he's got some seriously disturbing issues, most of which fall into the "Refusal to Grow Up" Category.

How can a super hot woman like Sarah go for a guy who routinely wins White Castle Slider Eating Contests? How can she be attracted to a guy who's favorite movie is "Tropic Thunder"? And Mike happens to be the only guy in the world who drinks Jagermeister on a regular basis. Most dudes get ripped on this deadly stuff once. Then they puke, have a three-day hangover then swear off the stuff forever.

Not Mike, though! He keeps coming back for more. How sick is that? Still, Sarah won't dump him.

When you read the answers to his "Going Off-Course" questionnaire below, you'll see that there's lots of other reasons for super hot babes to stay away from Mike Waataja.

Check out his favorite non-tri hobby: Jon Diving. Scary stuff!

Check out the fact that "Hall & Oats" is his favorite group. VERY scary. Poor Sarah, that super hot sister of Anna Kournikova, has to listen to "I Can't Go For That" on an almost daily basis. Imagine the words "No Can Do" sticking in your tormented brain like a bad commercial jingle.

And Mike must have developed his literary skills at the "Zoolander School For Kids Who Don't Read Good." (Did you see that movie? It's one of Mike's faves!) Heck, his favorite movie of 2009 was Avatar. Mike has seen it nine times and still spells it "A-v-i-t-a-r."

How could a super hot babe put up with someone like Mike?

Did we mention he suffers from IBS and is on a perpetual Quixotic quest (with fellow sicko Brett Lovaas) for the perfect Porta John?

There can be only one answer. Dude's got the Kavorka!

And here is some non-made-up stuff about the truly cool Mike Waataja, a fun-loving guy who can turn any social encounter into a party. Mike and Sarah will be moving to Chicago later in the spring. He will return occasionally to race, hang out with his plethora of friends, and do some Jaeger shooters. We'll miss you Mike. You are truly a special guy. And FYI, maturity is overrated.

And we'll miss Sarah, too. Sarah, here's some parting advice: Lose the doggie clothes. Your Boston Terrier does not like to play "dress up." No animal does. It makes the bum sniffing method of gender and species identification almost impossible.

Stuff about Mike:

Age: 34

Family: Super Hot Wife, Sarah and Dog, "Super" Boston

Colleges, Degrees: University of St. Thomas, BA Speech Communications

Occupation: Swim School Manager at Foss

Favorites:

Books: The Wind Chill Factor by Thomas Gifford

Movies: Tropic Thunder

TV Shows: "Big Bang Theory" (everyone has a little Dork Rocket in them)

Food: Chinese & Thai (but I pay for it later...)

Junk Food: White Castle sliders!!! (again, I pay for it later...)

Restaurant: Tea House and Cam Ron Bay (did I mention that I usually pay

for these kinds of foods later?)

Dream Vacation Destination: Paying my way as a Sherpa to the top of

Everest... but I'm cool with the cabin at Cross Lake also.

Songs: Anything but country (sorry Kevin O'Connor). "I can't go for

that" by Daryl Hall & John Oates really gets me pumped up before a TT or Tri!

Musicians: Hall & Oats!

Poems? What?... what???

Non-tri hobbies: "Jon Diving" (named after my crazy little brother and

consisting of sinking to the bottom of a lake and then being dragged

behind a speedboat, with goggles on. Disclaimer: don't try this, but if

you do, tie your swim suit TIGHT!)

Heroes: I believe I saw DKT walk across water during the swim start at

Heart of the Lakes... question answered?

Tattoos? Have any? None. (It's just a matter of time!)

Who should win: Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director

Avitar

The blue dude in Avitar (can an animation win this?)

The blue chick in Avitar (I don't care if an animation can't win this,

she's hot!)

Whoever directed Avitar...

And anything you want to add about yourself.

I'm packing up shop in MN in 2 months and moving to Chicago to build

swim schools in that quaint little city. I hope to continue to race a bit in MN during the summers, but would like to leave on this note:

The secret to a successful triathlon is finding the secret port-a-potty at a race. These secret port-a-potties are far removed from the long lines at transitions and have no lines for them at all. Secret port-a-potties are sterile, smell like flowers and have endless TP!!! Brett Lovaas and I have found ALL of these and have written a book, with maps, to be published when we retire from triathlon...

TOTALLY INTERESTING STUFF YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW ABOUT SUGAR, SALT & FAT...

Americans - increasingly - just can't put down the fork.

The frustrating part is that will power alone won't solve the problem, says Dr. David Kessler, former Food and Drug Administration commissioner and author of the recently released book "The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite."

Willpower won't do the trick because we're up against forces - highly addictive foods, neurological drives and a savvy food industry - that dwarf our resolve. READ

YOU KNOW THAT EUPHORIC FEELING THAT RUNNERS GET? NEITHER DOES BONNIE.....

By Bonnie Prozac

Have you ever felt like you were being whacked by hammers while running? Neither have I, but apparently this is a very accurate description for my fiancé...

Yesterday we were talking about the different phases we've noticed our bodies go through while running. For me, it would be more accurate to describe it as the different phases of agony and imminent death. My friend Moe has three phases which he describes with enthusiasm. I like to believe that someday I will feel the same if I just keep on training with consistency. Here is how Moe described his phases:

Miles 1-3: "A great warm up. I feel great!" (He's running a pace which equates to a speed faster than my all out sprint.Literally.)

Miles 4-10: "I feel strong and steady." (His pace here is something I flat out know I'll never get to even on a severe down grade.)

Miles 11 to Eternity: "A nice, strong finish. Refreshed." (A pace that is more like hyper speed or something that could get him a ticket for breaking the sound barrier. Die, Moe, die!)

My phases are as follows:

Mile 1: "This isn't fun. I'm not having fun. I need chocolate. Why do people do this?"

Mile 2: "There is no reason to live. Death is better."

Mile 3: "I can't breath or move my legs and I'm not sure how I am moving forward."

Mile 4: "Life is ok and I think I may live. What's for dinner?"

Mile 5-7: My brain has now left my body and my sole focus is on getting to the end. No thoughts here.

Mile 8+: "Why on earth do people do this? What is the purpose? Is there really a Santa Claus?"

My Fiancé's are:

Mile 1: "My ankle hurts and I can't breath."

Miles 2-4: "Life is good! I'm an athlete!"

Miles 5 "I've been running for a long time now and I miss not running...."

Miles 6: "Why did I ever take up such a fowl sports as this?"

Mile 7: "I have now given up my will to live."

Mile 8-9: "Every step feels as if hammers are whacking my quads."

Mile 10+: "I can no longer process the words coming out of my fiancé's mouth. I am having an out of body experience. Am I hallucinating or are there Arabs on horses over there?!"

Tomorrow we get to swim and bike. Running is a cake walk compared to how I feel on the bike....

STUFF YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW...

From ironman.com

World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owners of the portfolio that includes Ironman, Ironman 70.3, Iron Girl and IronKids brands, announces its partnership with John Duke for the launch of a new magazine. With plans to appear in late summer, the magazine will feature content for the serious and committed triathlete. Initial subscribers will be participants of domestic events within the 2010 Ironman and 70.3 Series. Digital subscriptions are planned for international participants.

The new magazine called LAVA, which takes its name from the chain of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean where Ironman and the sport began, will take readers into the fiery center of triathlon. While the Ironman World Championship hails as the pinnacle of the sport, athletes who value the regular and hard-core multisport experience will be the target for the magazine.

John Duke will oversee content for the brand and will serve as the magazine’s publisher and advertising director. Duke spent 14 years as publisher of Triathlete Magazine and most recently was Senior Vice President of the Print Media Division for Competitor Group.

"I could not imagine a better team to create the world's leading triathlon publication," says Duke. "Our team is excited to build a magazine for people who feel triathlon is not just a hobby, but rather a lifestyle. We are all looking forward to utilizing our first-hand racing experience, journalistic backgrounds and passion within the pages of LAVA."

The team will consist of Susan Grant-Legacki, former editor of Inside Triathlon, along with Jay Prasuhn, who served as tech editor at Triathlete Magazine for 10 years. Creative will be led by Erica Krystek, the former art director of Inside Triathlon, who was responsible for the redesign of Inside Triathlon's re-branding in 2008. The sales and advertising effort will be led by 11-time winner of the national track cycling championships, Sean Watkins, who was also the vice president of sales and event marketing for Triathlete Magazine. Heather Gordon, who started at Triathlete Magazine 11 years ago and rose to the position of associate publisher rounds out the team.

LANE HOGGAGE....

(Photos: Above - A crowded pool in China. Right - Bonnie and her dad eating chocolate, drinking whiskey and brandishing weapons--this pic has nothing to do with anything. Below - 4 swimmers in a lane - this is the only relevant photo in this post.)

By Bonnie.....

Today I was involved in a head on collision. My car is fine; my front bumper is perfect. This happened in the pool....

I went over to my big box athletic club to swim a few million laps like a good little triathlete. Fridays are water aerobic days for that location. I actually like doing my laps while they have the classes, if I can squeeze into the only lane they leave open for lap swimming use. For me, it's the best simulation to swimming in a lake that I can find. The bigger the class in more ways than one, the better. Bring on the waves! I have yet to do a triathlon or swim race at which the water was as smooth as glass.

As I was rounding the bend for who knows what lap number I was getting deep into my groove. I love to listen to the sound of the water and bubbles as they go by my ears. It's like a lovely melody to me. I pay attention to the smooth feeling of water going between my fingers with each stroke as I reach forward, as well as the water gliding over me like silk. I try not to pay attention to the murk left over from last fall still swiveling around on the bottom of the pool....

So there I was, swimming, listening, gliding when all of a sudden: BOOM! I literally ran head on into someone in my lane. I stopped in astonishment and stood up to find some guy looking at me like, "Hey, that's weird. How'd that happen?".... I gave him an incredulous look that was supposed to shout, "Friend, you need to warn someone before you go jumping into their lane!" But he didn't notice; he just took off swimming again.

Focus...

Need to focus...

I swam on and soon found that this guy was also a lane-hogger. I actually scraped my arm on the poolside trying to avoid getting my goggles poked out by his forward reach.

Patience.....

Need patience.....

Finally I stopped long enough at the lane's end for him to also have his 30-second rest between sets.

"Hi." I stated.

"Hi!" he smiled.

"Hey, next time, let me know if you'd like to get in my lane so I don't run into you again, okay?"

"Oh, sure. I thought you saw me."

"Nope." (Emphasis on the sound of the 'p'.)

Silence.

More silence.

Off I swam.

So what have we learned here today?

Waves are good and so is lap pool etiquette. Please let the other swimmers know if you would like to share a lane. Trust me, more often than not, we would be more than happy to, after all, it secretly gives us someone to race against!

YOGA STUFF...

(Photos: Right - Probably not what the author had in mind. Below - The famous "A" pose from that Village People song.)

By Sage Rountree

(From usatriathlon.org)

Yoga will make you a better triathlete. Even if you never do touch your toes, gaining flexibility, balance and whole-body strength will improve your form, efficiency and power.

And even if you never assume a single yoga posture, yoga's approach to concentration and breath awareness will improve your mental focus and mental endurance - the intangibles that become so important at the end of a long training session or race.

Yoga's physical, mental and spiritual approach will teach you how to integrate the body, the breath and the mind to stay focused and calm even in the face of intensity - a skill that will serve you in every aspect of your life, be it training, racing, work, relationships or undergoing a root canal...READ

GESTATION UPDATE...

Kortney Haag, winner of the Rookie of the Year trophy in '08 and the Most Improved award in '09, is currently very, very pregnant. We thought you'd like to be updated on her advancing gestation. FYI, she's past the gamete and zygote stages and her baby is presently enjoying full fledged fetushood. Let's hope that this kid doesn't turn out like her first one. As you can see, Owen has gone over to the Dark Side of the Force.

"I haven't posted any pics of my pregnant belly and so I thought it was time. I am 25 weeks pregnant so 15 more to go and I feel great. The other day I ran 9.3 miles on the treadmill at a 8:36 pace - I can't believe how good I feel when I run..." READ

PROFESSIONAL HOODWINKER...

(WARNING: Most of what you are about to read is pure gibberish.)

(Photo's - Marta looking very hot; Marta & her dad wearing hats; A "Marta" dining room; A "Marta" study.)

Have you ever looked at model homes?

Sure, you have. It was fun, wasn't it?

Don't you love the clever names for the models and the communities? In the Phoenix area, for instance, there are subdivision with "golfy" names, like "Troon North" and "Desert Fairways." And the models are called "The Pebble Beach" and "The St. Andrews." Stuff like that.

Here in Minnesota, many subdivisions have bucolic geographical names like Mississippi Cliffs and Snowy Creek and Prairie Glen; and the models have "lakey" names like "The Superior" or "The Minnetonka" or "The Nokomis."

Have you ever purchased one of these kinds of homes? If you have, then chances are you were totally disappointed when your finished house bore little resemblance to the beautiful model.

Do you know who is to blame for this unfortunate experience? Do you know who HOODWINKED you?

Marta Lewinski, that's who!

Actually, Marta isn't responsible for every single case of "Your
House isn't nearly as cool as The Model" disappointment. She's only responsible for the heartache experienced by those who purchased homes from the particular mega-builder for whom she works.

Marta Lewinski is an Interior Designer.

When you walk into a model home that Marta has interiorly designed, your feet sink deeply and comfortingly into the luxurious carpet with the 12th-upgrade pad. The furniture and artwork is insanely tasteful and urbane. This is because Marta has insanely tasteful taste that is insanely urbane. The chairs are probably "Italian Provincial" from the era of Luigi XIX and the tables were created by someone with a name like Pierre DePardeaux. On the walls are the framed works of famous artists like Pigasso and Del Taco and Latissimus Dorsi. And on the Austrian Swan Motif Bar Cart proudly stands an ancient regal vase, pronounced "Vahz," from the Yao Ming Dynasty, which is a Chinese deal from way back, probably the 50s. And what you don't know is that these furnishings and accessories cost more than the house.

Face it home buyers, your garage-sale furniture, especially the Lay Z Boy and that massive sectional that appears to have been upholstered with discarded golf slacks from the 70s, is not going to look as cool in your new place as the fancy stuff from The Model would have. And there's no way your "Elvis on Velvet" or "Dogs Playing Poker" that you got at the Starving Artists whose stuff used to hang in fleabag hotels sale will have the same impact in your new home as that Salivadore Dolly painting with the melting clocks had in The Model.

The next time you view model homes with interiors designed by the insanely tasteful and urbane Marta Lewinski, understand that you are outclassed. We suggest you purchase a model--The Nokomis, perhaps--that is at the lowest end of your price range; then take the money you made from the garage sale where you sold EVERYTHING in your old house and give it to Marta. She will then dog-ear all the appropriate pages--the ones that have decent looking stuff in your price range--in the Ikea Catalogue and send you on your way.

Here is some stuff we didn't make up about triathlete/interior designer/lovely person Marta Lewinski. You'll note that she really does have insanely good taste, except when it comes to ice cream. Coconut! Yuck!

TWO ALL-SOY PATTIES, SPECIAL SAUCE, LETTUCE, CHEESE, PICKLES, ONIONS ON A WHOLE GRAIN SESAME SEED BUN..

By Bill Nadeau (Ripped off from trijuice.com)

The diet of a triathlete is constantly scrutinized for its ability to optimally fuel the athlete for training and racing. We have previously reported on the vegetarian diet for triathletes. For our purpose, we define vegetarian as someone who eats eggs, dairy, and plants, but eliminates all meat, poultry, fish, and seafood, while an omnivore is someone who eats both plants and animals. Vegetarian triathletes can obtain all of the necessary nutrients to adequately fuel the body for hours of training and racing. In fact, a vegetarian diet may be more appropriate for triathletes because...READ
